In order to respond to the earthquake which struck Nepal on April 25, Shigeru Ban and his relief organization Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN) have announced that will support the victims with shelter, housing and other community facilities.
As an emergency response, they will deliver tents that have been collected through donation and will assemble at disaster affected area as a shelter and medical station. Shigeru Ban Architects and VAN plan to supply temporary houses using local materials which are available in Nepal.
Collaboration with local university, students and architects will assist the project. In the permanent housing phase, they will also be able to have a project for the people who need an assistance.
Shigeru Ban has been involved with the design of emergency structures since the early 1990s, first providing shelters in Rwanda in 1994 after civil conflict, and the next year in Kobe, Japan, after a devastating earthquake. Since then, he has used simple materials including paper tubes and corrugated plastic to organise emergency shelters in Turkey, India, Sri Lanka, China, Haiti, Japan, and New Zealand.
